Does the sector change the work?
In one specific way, yes. Every sector has someone who has to be persuaded, and the order they want proof in is different. A tender committee checks a contractor’s licence before it looks at the work. A patient decides whether a clinic feels safe before reading a word about it. A procurement officer wants a trading company’s authorisations before its prices.
The design craft does not change between them. What changes is which proof goes first, and getting that order wrong is how capable companies lose work to weaker ones with better documents.
- Do you only work with these industries?
- No. These are the sectors we have done the most work in and can therefore say something useful about. We take work outside them regularly — what matters is whether we understand who has to be persuaded, and that is a question we can answer in a first conversation rather than one requiring a portfolio in your exact field.
- Does industry experience actually matter when choosing a designer?
- Less than most people assume, with two real exceptions. It matters when the work is read by a committee against a checklist — construction tenders and government supplier registration are the clearest cases — and it matters where regulation constrains what you may claim, such as healthcare. Elsewhere, understanding the buyer matters far more than having drawn for that sector before.
- What changes between sectors in practice?
- Who reads the work and what convinces them. A contractor’s profile is checked for licence scope, comparable projects and safety record. A clinic’s website is judged on whether it feels safe and whether booking is easy. A trading company is assessed on authorisations and lead times. The craft is the same; the order of proof is not.
- Which sector do you have the most work in?
- Construction and contracting, where the company profile is a credential rather than marketing — which is why that sector has its own page with the detail on it. Beyond that, trading and technical services, and corporate and professional firms.
